Move Over Laws are for Everyone

Lately, staff members at J. Wilderman Autoplex have been discussing roadside signs that are popping up on the interstate highways and expressways we use on a regular basis. These signs generally state that a motorist should move over when there is a vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the road. These refer to cars, trucks, service and emergency vehicles that are stopped for whatever reason.

Changing lanes in a responsible manner makes the roads safer for everyone. By changing lanes and giving a stopped vehicle some room, a driver can avoid colliding with another vehicle. A vehicle that is re-entering traffic from the shoulder has the opportunity to do so safely. A tow truck can maneuver easily to provide assistance to a disabled motorist. Moving over under these circumstances means that traffic will continue to move safely and continuously. Using courtesy and being aware of traffic conditions makes driving more pleasant for everyone.
